Key Note Speakers:

Jennifer F. Koury, B.Comm.

Ms. Koury is the Vice President, Corporate Services at Enerplus Resources Fund and has been in that position since she joined the company in October 2006. Jen started her career at Imperial Oil Ltd in 1985 and left Imperial in 1996 to start her own consulting practice. Over the next ten years she honed her skills and talents in the field of HR by providing consulting services to a variety of oil and gas companies, both nationally and internationally. Ms. Koury graduated from the University of Alberta in 1985 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, specializing in organizational development and HR. She also holds a diploma in Business Administration with a specialization in Marketing from Red River Community College in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Gilles Prefontaine

Gilles Prefontaine is a business strategist, advisor, and agent of organizational change with an invigorating entrepreneurial spirit. Throughout his years in strategic marketing and operational leadership roles, he has been responsible for launching many new successful services, developing organizational design and strategy for growing companies, and implanting industry – leading best practices within national and international organization.

As a dynamic speaker, facilitator and storyteller, Gilles Prefontaine leverages the inspired writings of other great business minds in the field of leadership, marketing and organizational strategy, along with a Masters in Business Administration and a specialty in Human Resources form Heriot Watt University, to share thoughtprovoking ideas that will redefine the audience’s perception about what is business success.

Born and raised in Western Canada, Gilles spends his downtime in the playground with his wonderful wife Jaylene raising a sports lawyer, celebrity gourmand, and little princess Fiona. He is an active contributor to the community, involved with organizations such as Canadian Soccer Association, Junior Achievement and the United Way.

Chuck Smith


Chuck Smith, CHRP, has been performing Human Resources work for the last 33 years. He is a Human Resource Advisor with Syncrude Canada Ltd in Fort McMurray and is in his 31st year with the company.

As a senior‐level Advisor, Chuck has experience with Human Resource issues in the fields of recruitment, training, organizational development, policy development and interpretation, employee relations as well as Expatriate/Loanee assignment management. Chuck’s passion is mediation and conflict intervention with an emphasis on healthy work place relationships.

Chuck has a Certificate in Adult Education through the University of Alberta and received his training in ADR from the Alberta Arbitration Mediation Society.

Chuck is currently serving on the Board of Directors for the Alberta Arbitration Mediation Society, and the Wood Buffalo Human Resource Association of Fort McMurray and was a past Director for the Human Resources Institute of Alberta where he served as the director of Professional Development.

Chuck’s work‐life balance includes time for his family, church, participating in theatrical musical drama and refereeing pee wee, bantam and high school football.

Ian Turnbull, BA, MBA, CHRP


Managing Partner of Laird & Greer HR Management Consultants, Ian is co‐author of (3rd edition Carswell, 2007) of Human Resources Management Systems: A Practical Approach and Editor‐in‐Chief and co‐author of Privacy in the Workplace (2nd edition; CCH, 2009). Laird & Greer specializes in the selection, implementation and strategic and operational integration of human resources information management systems within organizations.

He has taught the practical application of HRMS at the Centre for Industrial Relations at the University of Toronto and is a frequent speaker at human resources, payroll conferences. Ian is the Past‐Chair of the Canadian Council of Human Resource Associations and the International Association for Human Resource Information Management. He is currently President of the Human Resource Association of York Region (HRPYR), a Chapter of the Human Resources Professionals of Ontario (HRPAO), and is a Director of the Canadian Privacy Institute.

Bob Delaney, CHRP


A graduate of York University ‐ Atkinson College, Bob Delaney, CHRP is a Teacher, Consultant and Entrepreneur. Bob´s teaching credits include courses in Human Resource Management, Labour Economics, Finance and Budgeting, Business Economics and Student Success, all at Seneca College. He has also taught Organizational Behaviour in the University of Winnipeg´s continuing education program in Human Resource Management. He currently facilitates Fanshawe College´s online exam prep course for the CHRP exams.

Mr. Delaney has been a guest lecturer and speaker at a number of colleges and universities. He has also developed and delivered Management Development Training to various corporate audiences using a variety of medians, including live satellite broadcast. He is one of the founders of Canadian HR Press, one of Canada’s leading providers of career and professional training. Canadian HR Press offers study guides and courses for preparing for the CHRP exams and works with Cornell University to deliver world‐class leadership development programs.

Bob has led several teams in the development of knowledge‐based websites for Human Resources Professionals, including HR.com and HRPA of Ontario’s knowledge centre. In this capacity he was intimately involved with the development of the site architecture and responsible for the content of the websites and led various research based teams. Bob’s articles have been featured in a variety of publications.

Bob’s academic background includes Business Administration, Economics, Industrial Relations, Human Resource Management and Dispute Resolution.

Karen Lynch


Karen Lynch is a respected community and civic leader, with over 30 years of diverse experience working with business, all levels of government, charitable organizations, politicians and nonprofit groups in Edmonton. She now brings her passion for community volunteerism to Volunteer Alberta as Executive Director, as well as engaging in the Edmonton Public Library Board of Trustees, and the Boards of Volunteer Canada and Alberta Ballet.

Roger R. Breault, MCS, CFRE


Roger R. Breult is a senior accredited fundraising professional, author and workshop presenter with extensive non‐profit and business expertise. He has raised over $67,000,000 through capital campaigns, sponsorships, annual giving, special events, direct‐mail, gaming, foundations, strategic alliances, telemarketing, planned giving, major gifts, and grantsmanship. Additional expertise in economic development, public relations, management, recreation, marketing and authority on the subject of speakers’ bureaus. Worked extensively for organizations across Alberta and Canada.

Roger is a recently retired Trustee of the Edmonton Public Library, Director of the Tomorrow Foundation for a Sustainable Future, Director, Alberta Library Trustees Association and Member, Edmonton Chamber of Commerce, Alberta Recreation and Parks Association, Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association and the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Past‐president of a national agency.

He is a successful self‐employment, business manager and entrepreneur. President of Fund Raising Consultants of Alberta© and the Speakers’ Bureau of Alberta© (SBA). As the President of the Speakers’ Bureau of Alberta Roger is a Certified Fund Raising Executive, (CFRE) with a Masters in Communication Studies from the University of Calgary.

Anujot Gill, CHRP


Anujot Gill, CHRP, currently works as a Human Resources Business Partner with Matrikon Inc since September 2009. She works on strategic HR planning with the corporate HR team as well as providing HR support with clients. Previously, she managed the HR function for a 250 employee Lilydale facility including recruitment, training and development, compensation, employee relations, performance management and disability management. Anujot started her career in recruiting with Convergys. Her focus was recruitment, branding and onboarding. She has been in the HR field for the last 5 years.

She is a University of Alberta graduate and designated with her CHRP.

Amal Popatia

Amal is a Recruitment/Outreach Consultant with Human Resources at the City of Edmonton. Through establishing a presence in the Edmonton student community, Amal is responsible for creating awareness of the City of Edmonton as an `Employer of Choice´ for students. Some of her current projects involve creating more student employment opportunities at the City of Edmonton and enhancing the City´s social media presence. Amal completed her Arts Degree at the University of Alberta and obtained her Masters in Human Resources Management from University of Westminster.

Kara Reed

Kara is a Recruitment/Outreach Consultant with Human Resources at the City of Edmonton. Kara recruits Finance and Accounting specialists for the Finance & Treasury Department. Some of her current projects include building a City of Edmonton presence through various Finance & Treasury associations as well as attending events and career fairs to speak to students about careers with the City of Edmonton. Kara completed her Community Rehabilitation & Disabilities Studies from the University of Calgary and is currently completing her Human Resource Certificate.

Murray Whitby

In his career, Murray Whitby has moved between roles in the HR department and roles in line management.  He has worked in a variety of industry sectors, and has gained national and international experience.  This varied background provides Murray with a unique and pragmatic perspective on the relationship between line management and the HR function.  Murray currently is back in line management, working as the Vice President of Operations for Medicine Shoppe Canada.
